Welcome to Moku Collective, a furniture design studio based in Byron Bay, where craftsmanship meets timeless design. Founded in 2020 by Matthew Johnson, Moku is all about celebrating the raw beauty of natural materials, slow living, and handcrafted quality.

Meet the Maker

Moku Collective was born from Matthew’s deep love for woodwork, passed down from his grandfather. From an early age, he was drawn to the art of shaping timber—learning how to craft furniture that’s both functional and beautiful. That passion evolved into a desire to step away from mass production and embrace the beauty of slow craftsmanship.

Why 'Moku'?

‘Mokuzai’ means wood in Japanese, and with a love for rustic simplicity, the name Moku was born. Our goal? To create furniture that’s not just aesthetically pleasing but timeless, built with purpose and care. We source reclaimed timber from all over Australia, giving each piece a story of its own.

Sustainable, Thoughtful, Real

We thrive on slow living and stepping away from fast production. Every piece is handcrafted to last a lifetime, letting the raw beauty of the materials shine through. Our designs embrace the imperfections and character of reclaimed wood, making each creation completely unique.

Custom & Handmade Designs

We offer our own handmade furniture designs, available on our website, as well as custom pieces made to order. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind dining table or a custom-built piece that fits your space perfectly, we’re here to bring your vision to life.
